Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 160))

Abstract

Lentiviruses occur in several species of animals and those that share DNA sequence homology with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) include equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) of horses, maedi/visna virus of sheep, and caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) of goats (Chiu et al. 1985; Sonigo et al. 1985; Pyper et al. 1986). Visna virus and related lentiviruses of sheep are distinguished from goat CAEV isolates by nucleic acid hybridization, DNA sequence, and immunologic reactivity (reviewed in Cheevers and McGuire 1988); however, the viruses can reciprocally infect sheep or goats (Banks et al. 1983).
