Sociodemographic and Premorbid Features of Schizophrenic, Schizoaffective, and Affective Psychoses

Abstract

Sociodemographic and premorbid features could be among the validating criteria for distinguishing between diagnostic groups of mental disorders. Schizo-affective disorders were assumed as belonging to the group of schizophrenias (Bleuler 1972; Huber et al. 1979; WHO 1979). Modern research, however, has shown that there are some interesting differences regarding course and outcome between schizophrenic and schizoaffective disorders (Marneros et al. 1986a–c, 1987, 1989a–d, 1990). Conversely, similarities between affective and schizo-affective disorders have also been reported (Angst 1986).
