Abstract
The division of acute pancreatitis into mild (edematous) and severe (necrotic) forms appears to be of great value when analysing the results of the treatment for these patients. This is deduced from the experience that mild pancreatitis is associated with low mortality and morbidity, whereas in cases predicted to be severe mortality ranges from 20% to 80%. It is recognized that, within the group classified as having severe pancreatitis, there are patients with fulminant necrotizing pancreatitis (type III) for whom the outcome is particularly poor in contrast with pancreatitis type II (partial necrosis). Therefore, all analyses should take these differences into account when different methods of treatment are being compared.
