Abstract
Since the discovery of the hybridoma technique monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) have been widely used in various fields of medicine [1], and immunological phentyping using MoAbs has become a routine technology for the characterization of leukemic blast cells of acute leukemias [2-5]. However, there exists only little experience with phenotyping in preleukemic disorders, for example in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). MDS, or “preleukemia,” are a group of cytopenias characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis and abnormal bone marrow and peripheral blood morphology and differentiation, involving at least two of the three myeloid lines. According to the French-American-British (FAB) Cooperative Group, the term MDS includes five subgroups: refractory anemia (RA), refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RAS), refractory anemia with excess of blast cells (RAEB), chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), and RAEB in transformation (RAEB-T).
