Abstract

The psychological aspects of breast cancer have been extensively studied because they concern an organ which is closely associated with the sense of body image, with self-esteem, with femininity and sexuality. Furthermore, because breast cancer is so common, many women have already had secondary experience of the disease with a relative or friend who suffered a dire outcome. The factors which influence the psychological attitude of women upon impact with the diagnosis of breast cancer may be summarised as follows (modified from J.C. Holland):
