Summary

The Shakespeare-Database Project is preparing a self-contained CD-ROM hypertext product of the complete works as a new research environment for Shakespeareans and linguists interested in Early Modern English. The design stresses strong DBMS support for hypertext systems. The database has more than ten entities and more than sixty attributes. Cardinality values range between 2,500 and 1 million records. Electronic facsimile pages of early Quarto and Folio printings are accessible via play (act, scene, line, speech prefix) and word (lemma, word- form, morpheme) references. Hypertext browsing is supported through various “traditional” entry points: textual collation and editing, vocabulary, and grammar. The database design encourages an integrative perspective. Navigational advice is available at all points.
