Dynamics of recoil-ion production

Atomic Physics of Highly Charged Ions

Abstract

The dynamics of the ionisation process of He by swift proton impact is discussed. Experimental results exploiting recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy (RIMS) are compared to results of nCTMC calculations. It is shown that the three body momentum exchange has explicitely to be taken into account to understand the scattering of the projectile in ionising collisions. For scattering angles around 0.55 mrad the scattering of the projectile at the target nucleus is of comparable strength to the scattering at the ionised electron. The electron emission is directed opposite to the scattered projectile for these scattering angles.
