Abstract
Severe infections and sepsis are characterized by ac tivation of the humoral cascade systems, including coagulation, fibrinolysis, and the plasma kalli-krein-kinin systems [1–25]. Both experimental and clinical studies have suggested that these protease systems are involved in the development of such complications as adult respiratory distress syn drome (ARDS) [26–29] and multiple organ failure (MOF) [29–31]. Furthermore, release of proteases from circulating cells, such as granulocyte elastase, has also been suggested to be an important factor in developing endothelial cell damage, leading to extensive permeability changes in the various organs [32–35].
