Abstract

The field of parallel processing has a significant potential for research in the field of fault tolerant systems. In particular, the envisaged systems consisting of thousands to hundredth thousands of processes demonstrate the need of built-in mechanisms to ensure reliable operation. This paper describes our approach of directly integrating a moderate number of processors to boost the system availability. One spare processor per 16 processing nodes is used in conjunction with special interconnect schemes and distributed control structures. Systems software and an appropriate application interface will be presented.
