Abstract
This is a leisurely discourse on problems of scientific methodology revolving around the notions of ‘model’ and ‘method’. General ideas and beliefs concerning their role and relative importance in the philosophy and practice of science are considered. The particular varieties of model and method that occur in Statistics are discussed in more detail. The fundamental but somewhat vague question, whether models or methods are the primary constituents and decisive forces in the scientific process, is raised and for the most part left open.
