Abstract

In 1991–1992 considerable progress was made in the classification of the lichen diversity on the earth. At least 28 genera and over 330 species, or ca. 2% of the presently known number, were newly described. To illustrate the significance of this figure, the number of new species described per year for the African phanerogam flora (ca. 30000–40000 species) was 133 in 1976 and gradually declining (Léonard 1979).
