Parasite-Invertebrate Host Immune Interactions

Invertebrate Immune Responses

Part of the book series: Advances in Comparative and Environmental Physiology ((COMPARATIVE,volume 24))

Abstract

Many of the preceding chapters and recent published reviews (Ratcliffe et al. 1985; Dunn 1986; Lackie 1988; Bayne 1990; Gupta 1991; Hultmark 1993; Ratcliffe 1993; Vasta et al. 1994) have amply documented the effectiveness and versatility of the immune system of coelomate invertebrates, especially in dealing with infectious microbial agents such as bacteria. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that protozoan and metazoan parasites evoke many of the same kinds of responses in their invertebrates hosts. However, because these parasites and their hosts share a common eukaryotic background (with its inherent cellular, biochemical and molecular complexities), one might expect basic host-parasite interactions also to vary from those involving microbial pathogens.
