Summary

Wave evolutions in a nonlinear equation with instability, dispersion, and dissipation are investigated both numerically and analytically. It is shown that equilibrium states or chaotic evolutions in the initial value problem can be described by interactions of localized soliton-like pulses arranged in a string. Nonlinear lattice equations governing the inter-pulse distances involve chaotic motions in accordance with the numerical results.
