Abstract

In retrospect, hydrological research and its achievements are usually seen from two different points of view. On the one hand, there is the scientist who emphasizes geophysical, geological, and geographic data and interpretations. On the other hand, there is the engineer who recognizes in the water supply and irrigation systems of ancient peoples a great wealth of experience in the management of water resources. Additionally, he will turn his attention to the measuring techniques which, at first developing rather slowly, have been improving rapidly from the start of modern times.
