Abstract

Among many examples of reconstructions on metal surfaces, the c(2 × 2) of W(001) has been studied most extensively and is still being actively studied. The nature of the phase transition of the W(001) surface was elucidated recently by experiments and some of the basic experimental data were analyzed theoretically with a phenomenological model Hamitonian, the suitability of which will be discussed here.
