Physioecological Problems in the Tropics

Tropical Ecological Systems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 11))

Abstract

Perhaps the original idea of physioecology can be found in the early phyto-geographic works of Humboldt (1806) and Grisebach (1884), who recognized the existence of a correlation between the distribution of vegetation types and climatic regions representing the fact that plants respond directly to their climatic environment. Later, with the spread of Darwin’s evolutionary theories, the idea of the existence of adaptations was introduced in experimental botany. By 1857, Lundegardh stated that “a plant species would be better adapted if it could utilize with more efficiency the energy and nutrients available. Thus structure and functions of plants are to be considered as continuously submitted to the changes of environment of a given habitat.” This idea permits us to understand why Schimper (1898) titled his outstanding book, Plant Geography on Physiological Basis. Unfortunately, at the time this book was published, the physiological mechanisms of plants were comparatively unknown.
