Zusammenfassung

Die verschiedenartigen Arterienveränderungen, die man auch bis jetzt noch mit dem Sammelnamen „Arteriosklerose“ bezeichnet, stellen zweifellos eine der häufigsten Todesursachen im vorgerückten Alter dar. Obgleich spezielle statistische Zusammenstellungen darüber fehlen, so erscheint doch dieser Satz durch die alltäglichen Erfahrungen der Kliniker sowie pathologischer Anatomen in genügendem Maße begründet. Die auf meine Veranlassung in dieser Richtung von Frau Dr. Marg. Hesse vorgenommene Bearbeitung eines größeren Sektionsmaterials ergab, daß auf 618 Todesfälle im Alter über 50 Jahren in 132 Fällen als Todesursache bzw. als Grundkrankheit die Atherosklerose (resp. die von ihr verursachten sekundären Organerkrankungen), in 177 Fällen derKrebs und schließlich in 118 Fällen die Infektionskrankheiten auftraten. Somit steht die Atherosklerose als Todesursache in diesem Alter an der zweiten Stelle nach dem Krebs.
