Abstract
The author first defines the problem of representation and its importance in various areas of intellectual activity embracing empirical and abstract sciences. The need is stressed for extended studies of the relationships between the concept of representation and that of sign (semiosis). Finally, notions of representation are classified into three categories and analysed relative to syntactic, semantic and pragmatic dimensions of sign processes and a unified semiotic interpretation of the representation problem is proposed.
