Standard Techniques and Microsurgical Procedures in the Removal of Supratentorial and Infratentorial Tumours

  • Chapter
Tumours of the Central Nervous System in Infancy and Childhood

Abstract

Godlee and Bennett appear to have been the first surgeons who marked the beginning of glioma surgery by the removal of a glioma from a young man in the year 1884. Then a few years later other surgeons such as Horsley and McEwen in Great Britain, Krause and von Bergmann in Germany and Keen in the USA ventured to perform such procedures which, with the absence at that time of any ancillary diagnostic measures, represented no small risk. Between 1900 and 1913 Cushing had operated on 194 tumours: he developed a number of the familiar techniques that are still used even today, and also introduced the endothermy in 1926 [2 a, 2 b].
