Abstract
In hydropower stations equipped with Pelton turbines in backpressure operation, knowledge of the required de-aeration length of the tailrace channel for recuperation of entrained air is of crucial importance with respect to economical operation of the plant. Void fraction below the Pelton wheel forms the inlet boundary condition of the „air-water“ two phase flow along the channel. In this paper results of prototype measurements are presented concerning the distribution of the flow coming down from the Pelton wheel just above the tailrace water level. Besides the impact velocity of the water particles on the surface of the tailrace water, diameters of the droplets coming down from the runner and their distribution over the casing section are presented. The measurements have been realized by using a newly developed meas uring technique based on pressure probes.
