Zusammenfassung
Heutige Verkehrsumgebungen wie Verkehrs- und Hinweiszeichen, Fahrbahnmarkierungen und Fahrzeuge sind für die Wahrnehmung mit dem menschlichen Auge ausgelegt (auch wenn erste Ansätze zur automatischen Beurteilung durch elektronische Sensorsysteme im Fahrzeug existieren, siehe Kap. 51). Dies geschieht beispielsweise durch unterschiedliche Formen, Farben oder eine temporale Änderung der Signale.
Es liegt daher nahe, auch für die maschinelle Wahrnehmung die Umwelt ähnlich wie das menschliche Auge zu erkunden. Hierzu sind Kamerasysteme imstande, da sie eine vergleichbare spektrale, räumliche und temporale Auflösung bieten. Zusätzlich zur „Nachbildung“ des menschlichen Sehens können bestimmte Kamerasysteme Zusatzfunktionen bieten, u. a. Aufnahmen in anderen Spektralbereichen für Nachtsichtfunktionen oder eine Entfernungsmessung.
