Zusammenfassung

Als der Niederländer Jakob Roggeveen im Jahr 1722 als erster Europäer die Osterinsel betritt, findet er eine kahle, lebensfeindliche Welt vor. Die wenigen Ureinwohner der abgeschiedenen Insel leben in Armut, denn ihre Vorfahren zerstörten mit der Abholzung der einstmals dicht bewaldeten Insel die ökonomische und ökologische Grundlage ihrer Kultur. Es gibt viele Beispiele in der Geschichte, die zeigen, wie sich Völker durch Übernutzung ihres natürlichen Reichtums beraubten – wenn auch wenige so drastisch sind wie das der Osterinsel.
