Abstract

Several sensitive parathyroid hormone (PTH) assays have been published, but differentiation between hypoparathyroid and healthy subjects remains a problem [7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23]. The main difficulty of the PTH radioimmunoassay (RIA) is the lack of assay sensitivity. This causes hypoparathyroid sera to be mistakenly placed within the normal range or PTH to remain undetectable in normal subjects. We have developed a procedure which is able to differentiate between normal and hypoparathyroid sera [26]. We used the same antiserum as for the “rapid assay” which has been described previously [25]. Guidelines are given for the establishment of highly sensitive assays.
