Abstract
If one expects an insight into the histological changes in muscle tissue, one should be aware of the fact that differentiated diagnoses are impossible to make using routinely prepared material, fixated in formalin. Material fixated with formalin and embedded in paraffin is advantageous only for detecting vasculitides and for ascertaining amyloid deposits. Variable degrees of shrinking of muscle fibres as well as fasciae do not allow to determine the diameters of muscle fibres such as is possible in biopsies prepared using a cryostat (Goebel 1999).
