Abstract

The backbone of optical transmission systems should provide as much bandwidth as possible for the lowest possible costs in order to make new wide band applications affordable and, therefore, attractive to each subscriber. One possible to increase the transmittable bandwidth of each fiber in the system is the combination of WDM with high-bit-rate time domain multiplexing (TDM) systems. A bit rate of 10 Gbit/s/channel is widely used today whereas the upgrade to 40 Gbit/s/channel and beyond is already planned. With 100 WDM channels, this leads to a transmittable bit rate of 4 Tbit/s per fiber.
