Abstract
The historic hypotheses postulated by Green and Harris (1947) over a quarter of a century ago have stood the test of time and have clearly established parvicellular neurosecretory neurons and the hypophyseal portal vasculature as the vital linkage in the transduction of bioelectric energy into blood-borne signals, the releasing factors. Recent evidence has suggested, in addition, the presence of parallel mechanisms which may serve as an alternative way in which biologically active molecules reach the portal bed. The purpose of this investigation was to test the distribution of radio-labelled releasing factors in the mammalian hypothalamus with autoradiography.
