Zusammenfassung

Die chemische Untersuchung der Baumwollpflanze ist lange Zeit hindurch vernachlässigt und eigentlich erst in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten systematisch in Angriff genommen worden. Die Baumwollfaser enthält neben Zellulose (ca. 90%), über die im 1. Bande dieses Werkes ausführlich berichtet wird, und Wasser (ca. 7%) ca. 3% andere Bestandteile. Die Notwendigkeit einer systematischen Schädlingsbekämpfung gab zu einer Untersuchung der aromatischen Bestandteile der Baumwolle Anlaß. Auch die beim Baumwollanbau abfallenden Nebenprodukte, die aus dem Samen der Pflanze gewonnen werden, wurden — vor allem hinsichtlich ihrer Eignung als Nahrungs- und Genußmittel — eingehend erforscht. Eine gute Übersicht über die Fortschritte, die die Erforschung der Baumwolle innerhalb der letzten Jahre erzielt hat, gibt eine Zusammenfassung von Browne2).
