Abstract

Owing to the medical and veterinary importance of trypanosomiases in tropical and subtropical countries of the Old and New Worlds, the mammalian trypanosomes have been studied extensively in the field and in the laboratory, with the result that a vast body of information regarding these haemoflagellates has become available. However, the literature on trypanosomiases reveals an alarming lack of knowledge regarding the identification and differentiation of the causative organisms. In their preoccupation with the purely medical and veterinary aspects of the diseases in question, some workers tend to lose sight of the trypanosomes themselves, with the result that the aetiology of the infections is often determined on purely clinical or epidemiological grounds. This attitude is reflected in the frequent application of the collective term “trypanosomiasis” to diseases caused by distinct species of trypanosomes. Furthermore, some authors seem to be under the impression that the criteria for the identification of the trypanosomes are not well enough defined for their differential diagnosis.
