Zusammenfassung

Suchtmittel sind Abhängigkeit erzeugende psychotrope Substanzen. Dazu gehören Opioide, Alkohole und andere sedativ wirkende Substanzen (z. B. Benzodiazepine, Barbiturate), Cannabinoide, psychomotorische Stimulanzien (Nikotin, Amphetamine und Cocain), Halluzinogene (z. B. LSD) und Designerdrogen (Ecstasy, Phencyclidin). Alle Suchtmittel üben einen Belohnungseffekt aus, sodass sich ein starkes Verlangen nach neuerlicher Einnahme (Craving), also psychische Abhängigkeit, entwickelt. Bei einigen Vertretern wie Opioiden, Alkohol und Sedativa entsteht auch eine deutliche physische Abhängigkeit, die durch eine Entzugssymptomatik nach deren Absetzen charakterisiert ist.
