Sleep Alterations During Post-Traumatic Coma as a Possible Predictor of Cognitive Defects

Abstract

Enphasis has been recently laid on the problem of quantifying and treating neuropsychological deficits following severe head injuries2,10,19, 20,27. Correlations have been sought with the entity of injury, expressed by parameters such as the duration of unconsciousness20, of PTA10,19, or the presence of skull fractures and neurological deficits10,27.In previous papers we2 demonstrated a significant correlation with the neurological syndrome of level of lesion in the acute phase. Since in acute coma semiology the important and characteristic EEG alterations have a clearly demonstrated prognostic significance5,9,30, our aim is that of studying the possible correlation between sleep and cognitive abnormalities.
