Abstract
Surface replacement for articular cartilage defects has assumed greater importance in recent years because of two factors. The first is the increasing longevity of the population throughout the world which is leading to a higher incidence of osteoarthritis, initiated in some cases by early injury to the joints, and the second is the increased incidence of joint injuries caused by sporting and other accidents in the younger population.
