Summary
The designed Engelberg Base Tunnel is one part of the reconstruction measures of the motorway Heilbronn — Stuttgart. To pre-vent the inhabitants of the very high noise and other immissions and to improve the traffic-conditions by cutting the now existing 6% steep gradient on both slopes up to the crown tunnel, a base tunnel with a gradient of 0,9% and a length of 1950 m shall be built.
After having studied different possibilities it is planned to build two tubes with three lanes each, a crossection of 166 m2 excavation and a clear span of 16,30 m. The distance between the axes of both tubes shall be 36 m. Because of the great length of the tubes two draw-ins are designed. There the clear span is 18,50 m and the excavation area is 233 m2.
Road tunnels with comparable dimensions have not been executed in sulphatic rock mass. In the entry sections there have to be passed through the for tunnels practice very difficult strata ground formations, which is leached out, partly dumped and highly waterbearing. In the internal part the tubes go through the not leached out sulphatic rock, which shows high expansibility, if contact with humidity happens.
To get more informations about the different strata and its rockmechanical behaviour, an exploratory gallery with a diameter of 4 m and a length of about 1000 m was excavated. Having got knowledge about the rock conditions in this stretch which has oped all characteristic rock strata and the Engelberg geological main fault, the position of both Test Enlargement Halls could be fixed. In fact of their different purpose, the cross section of the test halls has been designed different. In length (50 m) and clear span (15,6 m) the investigation chambers are the same. In the meantime, after having excavated the Test Enlargement Hall in the anhydrite rock mass, the second test hall in the leached out rock is under construction. All the excavation and supporting works in the gallery as well as in the test halls are connected with an extensive measuring program. Furthermore mineralogical-, petrographic-and chemical investigations are in excution.
