Die Bedeutung Wiens für die Entwicklung und Verbreitung der Kataraktextraktion um 1800

Zusammenfassung

Sowohl für die Einführung einer selbständigen Ophthalmologie in das Universitätswesen als auch für die Einführung und Verbreitung der Starextraktion hatte Wien zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts eine international führende Bedeutung. Diese Entwicklung ist untrennbar mit G. J. Beer (1763–1821) verbunden. Ohne wesentliche Protektion arbeitete er sich vom anatomischen Zeichner in der Jugend über den Armenaugenarzt zum ersten Ordinarius der Ophthalmologie hoch. Im Gegensatz zu vielen Zeitgenossen setzten er und seine Schüler sich persönlich in besonderem Maße für die Ausbildung ungezählter ärzte in der Augenheilkunde ein, so daß zumindest in unserem Sprachraum kaum ein Augenarzt sich nicht auf die Wiener Schule Beers beziehen kann.

The contribution of the Vienna school to cataract surgery. Up to 1812, ophthalmology was considered an appendix to anatomy or surgery. In 1773, J. Barth (1745–1818) had been appointed professor for anatomy and ophthalmology in Vienna by Maria Theresia. He learned the cataractextraction from the french oculist de Wenzel in 1777. G. J. Beer (1763–1821) was a disciple of Barth who, however, appreciated him merely as a capable draughtsman of anatomic specimens. Barth did not encourage him in any way when Beer approached him for training in ophthalmology on his own with an iron energy. In 1802, he established himself as privat dozent, and, though self-taught, soom was in great demand as an oculist and a teacher in his speciality. Beer was appointed professor for ophthalmology in 1812, the first in the world. In 1818, Beer was made full professor for ophtalmology. But in 1819 he had to give up his chair and his practice because of a stroke. Friedrich Jaeger, assistant and son-in-law of Beer, was professor of ophthalmology at the medico-surgical Josef academy in Vienna. An excellent physican and surgeon, he made his method of choice the cataractextraction with the section above.
