Summary
Research work on the hierarchal finite element method at BIAA is reported. Three kinds of hierarchal shape functions based on the polynomials of progressively ascending power are presented in explicit and the neatest form, and their merits and demerits are compared with one another. Unified and explicit formulas for evaluating the relevant element matrices are developed such as to reduce the numerical error during computation to the lowest level. Sample examples are given to show the efficiency and advantages of the present hierarchal finite element method.
