An Overview of CrossoverNet

A Local Area Network for Integrating Distributed Audio Visual and Computer Systems

Abstract

CrossoverNet is a new type of local area network for integrated management of audio visual and computer facilities. It has been already over two years since CrossoverNet was installed on a university campus to aid actual class room activities. Both for scheduled and interactive use of the facility, CrossoverNet has been proven to be effective and user-friendly. Especially, audio visual devices, which are designed mainly for use independent of one another, have been integrated into computer workstations and their network to increase their controllability remarkably. CrossoverNet has further enhanced its controllability by an interactive and user-friendly iconic menu program through which a user issues commands to control the devices. On the other hand, these menus also have burdened programmers with extra time and labor because they were all custom-made. To solve this problem, we have designed and implemented a prototyping system called InteractiveProto that aids an end-user to develop a menu himself/herself without programmer’s help. Another technological key point of InteractiveProto is that it helps a user to develop a prototype menu using a visual or graphical programming language instead of a traditional textual programming language. The manner InteractiveProto adopts can; be applied to wide areas beyond the control of audio visual devices.
