Abstract

This family of sections is obtained when the chest is cut sagittally slightly to the left of the midline of the fetal body or parasagittally with slight angulation toward the left fetal shoulder. The two extreme planes of these sections are indicated on the fetal body and a heart diagram in Figure 15.1. The diagram illustrates how all sections within these two planes pass through the main pulmonary artery, the arterial duct, and its junction with the descending aorta. However, these sections differ from the structures sectioned inside the body of the heart. In fact, parasagittal, sections include the inlet portion of the right ventricle, the tricuspid valve, and a transverse section of the aortic root. True sagittal sections pass through the trabecular part of the right ventricle anteriorly, the mitral valve, and the left atrium posteriorly.
