Riassunto

La prostata — il cui sviluppo embrionale è condizionato da diversi fattori, tra i quali l’indispensabile presenza del testosterone fetale — raggiunge circa 20 grammi di peso al terzo decennio di vita e contiene un segmento di uretra della lunghezza di 3 cm in diretta comunicazione con il collo della vescica [1]. Sebbene tradizionalmente i lati della prostata siano indicati come lobi, attualmente si preferisce fare riferimento a una divisione zonale della prostata, proposta prima da Gil-Vernet (1953) e poi da McNeal (1970), cui va il merito di aver precisato per primo i rapporti tra le diverse zone.
