Riassunto

Nonostante i progressi nella biologia molecolare, nell’istochimica, nell’immunoistochimica, nella microscopia elettronica e nella radiologia, l’analisi anatomo-patologica di routine rimane l’elemento fondamentale per la diagnosi e la stadiazione dei tumori della testa e del collo. Questo capitolo intende descrivere la storia naturale dei carcinomi squamocellulari delle mucose (SCC) — l’archetipo dei tumori maligni della testa e del collo — sulla base di quello che si riconosce all’esame istologico di routine. Le possibili difficoltà con cui il patologo deve confrontarsi per fare diagnosi ai diversi stadi della storia naturale della malattia vengono illustrati in modo da aiutare i clinici ad apprezzare le procedure applicate nella diagnosi istologica dei tumori e le possibili cause di incertezza o controversia.
