CT Specifies Bone Lesions in SPECT/CT

Abstract

Traditionally, planar bone scintigraphy (PS) is a very sensitive technique regarding the detection of bone lesions, but specificity is limited. In most cases PS is sufficient to exclude or detect bone metastases in tumor patients. Experienced nuclear physicians are able to differentiate degenerative from malignant lesions because of the intensity and localization of radionuclide uptake in the majority of examinations. Additional performance of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) increases the sensitivity of bone scintigraphy. In focal lesions that are not clear on planar or SPECT images, a supplementary SPECT/CT examination can provide a definite diagnosis in approximately 90% of lesions [1–3] (Figs. 1, 2). SPECT/CT is especially helpful in assessing lesions of the axial skeleton (Fig. 3).
