Del genere Aloe si conoscono attualmente più di 400 piante, addirittura 600 secondo alcuni Autori, alcune delle quali ancora oggi utilizzate in medicina in molte parti del mondo. Diverse sono spontanee in Africa (A. ferox Miller, A. africana Miller, A. spicata Baker, A. platylepia), Natal (A. candelabrum) e Yemen (A. perryi Baker, A. socotrina), altre sono state introdotte in Asia (A. chinensis Baker), Barbados, America centrale (A. barbadensis Miller, nota come A. vera (L.) Burm o A. vulgaris Lamark) e in Europa (A. arborescens Miller).
