Research and higher education are global activities that can be characterised by increased competition for human and material resources. The role of universities in the knowledge system has undergone important changes and universities are now and will become even more dependent upon their reputation, understood as perceived quality, influence and trustworthiness. In this context, it is necessary to rethink the way that we in universities evaluate our relevant activities and their quality.

This contribution first presents a brief description of the origins and profile of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, and summarises our ambitions as formulated in our strategy. We then discuss the potential added value of the European higher education classification to our university's endeavour to achieve excellence and meet our strategic objectives.
