This paper presents WebDMF, a Web-based Framework for the Management of Distributed services. It is based on the Web-based Enterprise Management (WBEM) family of standards and introduces a middleware layer of entities called “Representatives”. WebDMF can be integrated with existing WBEM infrastructures and is not limited to monitoring. On the contrary, it is capable of actively modifying the run-time parameters of a managed service. Due to its abstract design, it is suitable for the management of a variety of distributed services, such as grids and content delivery networks. The paper includes a discussion on Web-DMF's design, implementation and advantages. We also present experiments on an emulated network topology as an indication of the framework's viability.
