Surveillance for Arthropodborne Diseases

Abstract

Surveillance is the act of watching over something. A survey is a general study or inspection. Applied to infectious diseases, surveillance and surveys both involve the systematic collection of data relating to the occurrence or likely occurrence of disease cases. Surveillance programs continue indefinitely, whereas surveys are of limited duration. Surveillance may involve detecting cases within human and animal populations, monitoring infectious agents in natural vectors or reservoir animals, seroconversions in sentinel animals, estimating vectors or reservoir host population abundance, and assessing weather patterns.
