Abstract
An advisory expert system is presented. The system is designed to advise a user on the choice of routine to solve an approximation problem, from two libraries of routines, DASL and NAG. The system was built using a commercial expert system shell, Expertech Xi®. The features of Expertech Xi® are described and the implications of the design on this application are discussed. The structure and implementation of the advisory system are illustrated by an example user query. The rules, questions and defaults of the system are presented in an appendix.
