Abstract
Affective Disorders are etiologically heterogeneous when starting from clinical data and using different partioning criteria; we are not still able to discriminate among hypothetically and etiologically different forms of disease. We should identify unequivocal phenotypes strictly related to well shaped genetic structures or, using an opposite approach, we should validate phenotypic criteria with formal genetic methodologies (1). Among phenotypic criteria the subdivision into Endogenous and non Endogenous Depression failed to be validated from the point of family study data. In fact they did not confirm the hypothesis that first degree relatives of patients with Endogenous depression had a higher rate of depressive illness.
