Comparison of Possible Chemical and Microbial Factors Influencing Paper Decay by Iron-Gall Inks

  • Chapter
Biodeterioration 7

Abstract

Both chemical and microbial factors may be the causes of ink eating. Deteriogens produced by microbial action are organic acids, cellulase and H202 . Thefungi growing mostfrequently on ink were isolated and investigatedfor the production of deteriogens. The deteriogenic effect of the possible biologicalfactors on paper was determined as a decrease in thefolding endurance and compared with the effect of chemicalfactors (acidity; Fe2+. Fungal growth in ink was rather poor. Cellulase and organic acids have to be taken into account as biological deteriogens but to a lesser extent than the radical mechanisms catalysed by Fe2+.
