Nonlinear Optics in Micro-Meter Sized Droplets

  • Chapter
Quantum Optics of Confined Systems

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 314))

Abstract

Many groups are actively studying various aspects of microcavity physics and optics; hence the topic of this NATO ASI. One of the subfields is dye lasing and nonlinear optical effects in microdroplets (since 1984) and, more recently, in liquid jets and liquid in thin capillary tubes. Although dye lasing and nonlinear optical effects in an optical cell are well studied and much understood, when dye lasing and nonlinear optical experiments are conducted in the spherical, nearly spherical, and cylindrical liquid microstructures, inevitably “surprises” occur because of the microstructure morphology (size, shape, and index of refraction).
