Abstract
Nutritional pathology in breast-fed infants may be related to all or to particular nutrients, and it may be a problem for individual mothers and their babies, or potentially a problem for the whole population. A possible classification of low nutrient intake in breast-fed children is shown in Table 1. This review is concerned mainly with the ‘all mothers, particular nutrients’ section but the other two are considered briefly. It is not a systematic review, but attempts to indicate points of practical management of the mother-children dyad, and to raise some questions for the infant food industry. I have also aimed to be more speculative, even contentious, than in a systematic review.
