Abstract
The menopause is a universal physiological phenomenon. In the West the associated biological transition, the climacteric is assumed to have inevitable physiological and behavioral effects. The relationship between the biophysical and behavioral factors of the climacteric has been obscured by the tendency of Western biomedicine to conceive and define the climacteric as a disease episode rather than as a natural process.
