Abstract

The precipitation of a metal from a solution of one of its salts by another metal is known as “cementation” although “contact reduction” or “metal displacement reaction” are used. Cementation is a very old technique which has been known in China since the Sung’s dynasty (1000 before J.C.). Nowadays it is widely used in hydrometallurgy either for extraction or purification. Classic examples of industrial importance include: copper extraction from process streams by cementation on iron, purification of electrolytic zinc sulfate solutions by cementation of copper and cadmium with zinc powder, gold cementation from cyanide solutions with zinc dust.
